Bandai Armorplus: Yoroiden Samurai Troopers Rekka No Ryo

Eversince Bandai's announcement at its tamashii event, I have been waiting anxiously for their new Armorplus Yoroiden Samurai Troopers Rekka no Ryo.

Now that it has been released, was it worth the wait and anticipation? Here's my thoughts on this newest rendition of this character (and hopefully new Samurai Trooper line) from Bandai.

Click the pics for hi-res pic links.

The figure comes in a beautifully illustrated box showing both Ryo donning his Rekka (wildfire) armor as well as the armor in its  object state. The box also features an exclusive illustration of Ryo Sanada, though I have yet to find out who the artist is but the illustration is properly credited on the box , although  it's a shame that I can't read japanese..

The box features an opening  cover complete with velcro attachments, and the toy is gloriously displayed in the window box underneath the top covering.

The toy has two tray layers, the upper tray stores the Ryo figure,  unsheathed sword, armor parts and the Dummy Samurai Spirit body so that you can display the Samurai armor in its object form. The lower tray includes some more armor parts, fused katana (double bladed naginata) and Sheathed swords.

Thanks to this opening window, in store buyers can inspect first the item for quality control issues before purchasing the item.

Before  I go on with the mini review, since Samurai Troopers aint exactly mainstream anime and quite an old anime at that.. here's a few vids you might want to check out first in order to  better appreciate this character/toy.

Yoroiden Samurai Troopers TV Opening  1

Yoroiden Samurai Troopers TV Opening 2

Samurai Troopers Armor up!!!

Yoroiden Samurai Troopers as an anime, features one of the best opening sequences IMO. With songs sung by famed Japanese Singer Hiroko Moriguchi (Zeta Gundam, Gundam F91).

Anyways, here's some loose pics of the toy and my thoughts about it..

Ryo Sanada, The figure sans the armor features anime accurate sculpting of the face and inner armored gear. The figure boasts at least 32points of articulation, maybe more, and includes ball joint on the shoulders, thighs, wrists, neck and head.

The figure is mainly made of plastic but the feet not including the "U" shaped bars at his heels is made of solid diecast metal.

Ryo includes optional parts for the hand, (3pairs) neck, and head.

Here is my lame attempt at Ryo's armor up sequence... (I do hope you watched the armor up vid link above  before looking at this pic sequence.)

"Bussssooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!"

"Reeeeekkkkkkkkaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!"

Now this is where this figure really shines, Both figuratively and literally. The armor has decent amount of diecast parts on the feet, knee caps (yep including those spikes!), shin guards, thigh armor platings, (front, side and back skirts), Front chest piece, back armor, shoulder armors and those elbow spikes.

At first I was a bit dissapointed that Bandai didn't made the swords  in a way that it can be sheathed and drawn. They just included a pair of hilts, sheath and drawn katanas as well as a combined katana that forms a double bladed naginata.

But after opening and inspecting the  toy I realized that this was for the better, so as to avoid scratching the  chrome parts of the swords from the eventual sheathing and unsheathing. If Bandai had chosen to go with the sheathable swords route I'm sure they'd have tons of hate email and complaints flooding them right now!
The armor also includes a seperate front half without the face guard on.

Action Shots..

This has got to be one of my favorite shots of Ryo with his armor.

Overall I'm very pleased with this particular purchase. Pricewise I think  its a little steep, this toy would've been perfect if it costs around the 2-2.5k PHP range, but at the price I got it I guess its decent enough, not too marked up, not too good of a bargain but just right. If you're a Samurai Trooper fan, this is no doubt a must have collectible, it simply makes all the old playmates and Takara toys obsolete. I just hope Bandai follows  it up with the other four troopers as well as the Inferno Armor, as for the villains, I could live without those, but might get them too if ever they do get released and the price is good enough. For non fans who collects japanese toys well, this is really a great anime accurate action figure with diecast parts,  that alone is a great selling point to ponder, besides, how cool is it to have a Samurai Figure with diecast Samurai Armor on your shelf right?

Thanks for looking!

Disney's Pirates of the Carribean by Zizzle

Disney's Pirates of The Carribean by Zizzle

A line that is currently on hiatus, I hope with the announcement of the new 2011 Pirates of The Carribean 4 movie: "On Stranger Tides" that more 3 3/4" figures will be made for the franchise, I don't mind if Zizzle still gets the license to produce figs, these figures are great considering their scale, I just hope they add in a few more points of articulation.. ball jointed shoulders would do just fine! Very Happy

I know for their scale this line just screams "unattractive" well I dont mind, but that would be the case if it was 3-4years back.. now, with the (roaring) comeback of 3 3/4" scale lines like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Marvel universe and GI Joes.. this line has become a more interesting rendition of the POTC franchise..

I'm a toy playset/vehicle whore, so naturally, this line was the better option rather than getting the mcfarlanesque Neca POTC line.. and I'm not complaining.. I just love the sculpts and detailing on these small figures.., I know for a fact that its always harder to put detailings on small figures.. so you just gotta admire how Zizzle produced their POTC line..

Will Turner (orlando bloom)

now compare it with neca's Will Turner face sculpts here and here

eek! Laughing

Bootstrap Bill, One of the best figures in the line, great detail and great likeness of the character

Elizabeth Swann Empress Captain, probably the best face sculpt for Keira Knightley on this scale, great gold detailings on her outfit too.

Sao Feng's head tattoo, again the attention to detail for such a small figure as well as on his outfit.

(click for hi-res pics)

Crew of the Black Pearl, still missing a decent Ragetti, and Capt. Jack with coat on.. (anyone selling these please send me pm,having a hard time tracking them locally, Thanks!)

Will Turner, Captain Barbossa, Jack the monkey (from IJ monkeyman), Pintel, Marty, Gibbs, generic pirates (comic pack pintel and ragetti), Monkeyman from IJ line can pass as a decent enough pirate-y looking figure..and Capt. Jack Sparrow

The crew of The Flying Dutchman

Maccus, Koleniko, Davy Jones, Hadras (with removable shell head), Clunker, Palifico and Bootsrap Bill Turner

Empress crew

Captain Elizabeth Swann, Sao Feng, Tai Huang and Jack the monkey in Singapore Fishing Village outfit

Father and Son

"A touch of destiny..."-Tia Dalma

The Heart of Davy Jones

"Stab the heart.. Dont stab the heart! Sail the seas for eternity... live Forever, the Immortal Jack Sparrow.. ooh I like that.."-Jack

Gathering of Pirates

"Parley?"-Jack

Yes, yes I love electronic toys.. and this little nifty accessory from the movie is a very welcome addition.. goes great with the Black Pearl's Captains quarters too!

Back to the Brig Jack

"....leverage!"-Jack

"Full Canvas!!!"

One Piece Mugiwara (Strawhat) Pirates

Bandai One Piece Catalog Insert

Another anime line that I like very much is One Piece, Its about a group of pirates and their (mis)adventures, its now one of the most popular anime shows in Japan. The manga is also going strong and Luffy the main protagonist has been ranked no.1 three times for Shounen Jump's character popularity polls.

Back in 2002, Smarty toys released a couple of One Piece Merchandise to coincide with Gma7's One Piece airing of the show. Along with these was Bandai's One Piece Action Figures, it was a highly poseable line of 5" action figures with lots of accessories, sadly One piece was not yet known locally, coupled with Smarty's SUPERB pricing scheme, the toys flopped, and the line went on sale, but not after about three years of warming and clogging the pegs..

Anyways, I'm glad I picked up the figs back then, cause right now, these are the only decent One Piece action figures available on the market, Mattel released One Piece action figures also, but of course the sculpt was not up to par to Bandai's versions, and Mattel's action features was such an obstruction for the sculpt of the figures. Sad thing about bandai's line though is the release was only limited to select key characters, (surprise surprise! Every DBZ fan knows that) So long story short I couldn't complete my Mugiwara (strawhat) Pirate Crew. Had to get out of scale static figures of Nami and Robin just to make a decent looking Mugiwara crew... Crying or Very sad

Fast forward 6years later.. and Bankee releases Bandai's Styling figs, although static and not poseable, I immediately realized that these are the figures I was waiting for, decent enough placeholders for the other Strawhat pirates that I lack in my collection, great scale, and great sculpts to boot! Very Happy

Action shots for the Strawhat pirates with the highest bounties:

"Black Leg" Sanji 77,000,000 beli bounty

Nico Robin 80,000,000 beli bounty (DF user)

Roronoa Zoro 120,000,000 beli bounty

SantoRyuu (3 Swordstyle)

Monkey D. Luffy 300,000,000 beli bounty (DF user)

Gomu Gomu pistol!!!

In Arabastan Garb with Arabastan Princess Nefertari Vivi (aka Miss Wednesday)

And an extra although not necessarily a Strawhat..

The center of the current manga storyline, Portgas D. Ace, Luffy's Brother and a Captain of the Whitebeard Pirates.

Fire Fist Ace

And to cap things up, the 8" Banpresto prize fig that was available before for P599.75 but it went on further sale for as low as P200! Laughing
